History

The Buena Vista Estate, established in 1789, is a historic gem located in the heart of Downtown Nassau, The Bahamas. As one of the island’s oldest estates, it has stood as a symbol of Bahamian history for over two centuries. Originally built during the colonial era, the estate’s elegant architecture combines European influences with Caribbean charm, making it an iconic landmark. Its expansive gardens, sweeping verandas, and breathtaking views of Nassau’s harbour have long made Buena Vista a sought-after destination for prominent figures and events throughout its storied past.

Over the years, the estate has hosted a variety of distinguished guests and celebrities, enhancing its allure as a cultural and social hub. In the mid-20th century, the American folk singer and actor Burl Ives often vacationed at the Buena Vista, enjoying its tranquil setting. It also welcomed political figures such as Bobby Kennedy, as well as Hollywood stars and other celebrities seeking an exclusive Bahamian retreat. Most recently, the estate was featured as a filming location for the James Bond movie Casino Royale, showcasing its timeless appeal and cinematic charm.

Today, The Buena Vista is home to John Watling’s Distillery, where its legacy continues through the art of traditional rum-making. The distillery honours the estate’s history by using time-honoured techniques and locally sourced ingredients to craft small-batch rums. Visitors are invited to explore the historic grounds, learn about the rum-making process, and immerse themselves in the estate’s rich heritage. This blend of history, craftsmanship, and Bahamian culture offers a unique experience that celebrates the past while looking toward
the future.
